When an autonomous AI agent makes a decision that causes harm, who bears responsibility? The developer who built the system? The organisation that deployed it? The individual who configured it? Current legal and ethical frameworks were designed for human decision-making and do not map cleanly onto autonomous systems. The ethical principle is clear: people should have meaningful knowledge of and consent to AI involvement in interactions that affect them. Autonomy Boundaries
Perhaps the most fundamental ethical question is how much autonomy AI agents should have. Full autonomy maximises efficiency but minimises human control. Restricted autonomy maintains control but limits the value of automation. The ethical answer depends on context: the stakes of the decisions, the reliability of the AI system, the availability of human oversight, and the consequences of errors. Low-stakes, reversible decisions can be fully automated. High-stakes, irreversible decisions should always involve human confirmation.
Building Ethical Agentic Systems
Responsible development of agentic AI requires embedding ethical considerations into system architecture, not treating them as an afterthought. This means designing AI agents with configurable autonomy levels, comprehensive logging of decisions and actions, clear escalation pathways to human oversight, and robust testing of edge cases and failure modes. It also means engaging with the broader societal conversation about how much autonomy we are comfortable granting to AI systems, a conversation that technology companies have a responsibility to inform rather than avoid.
